About XLV files
The .XLV file extension represents a Microsoft Excel Visual Basic Module. These files contain script code written in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), which is used to automate repetitive tasks, create custom macros, and build complex functions within Microsoft Excel.
To properly utilize and execute these files, you need Microsoft Excel, as the code interacts directly with the Excel Object Model. However, text editors like Notepad++ or Visual Studio Code can be used to open and safely read the raw code. For more background on the underlying language, see the VBA Wikipedia page.
The primary disadvantage of the .XLV format is its significant security risk and proprietary lock-in. Macro files are notorious vectors for malware, meaning sharing or receiving them often triggers email firewalls and antivirus warnings. Furthermore, you cannot natively view or execute this code on mobile devices, web browsers, or alternative spreadsheet software without a paid Microsoft 365 subscription.
To bypass these annoying limits, you should convert .XLV files to standard text formats like TXT, BAS, or VBA. Converting to plain text strips the file of its immediate execution capabilities but preserves the logic completely intact, allowing you to share the code safely with developers or audit it for malicious commands.
Because .XLV files belong to a closed, proprietary ecosystem, standard online converters often fail to process them. If our analysis detects supported underlying text-based scripting, viewing or conversion may still be possible without launching a heavy spreadsheet application.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XLV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The XLV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XLV converter.
