About XIA files
The .XIA file extension represents an encrypted ciphertext file created by Chiasmus, an encryption software suite developed by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). Government agencies and businesses use this software to encrypt sensitive files before transmitting them over insecure networks or storing them on portable media.
Users often attempt to convert .XIA files to access the original content, such as a PDF, DOCX, or XLSX document. However, this format presents significant usability challenges. It is proprietary, entirely unreadable by web browsers, and requires the exact cryptographic password or keyfile to decrypt. Standard text editors will only display scrambled binary characters.
Standard online converters will fail to process a .XIA file because the data is mathematically obfuscated. You must use the original BSI Chiasmus software or the XIA Encryption Tool to provide the password and restore the original target format.
Because this is a closed, secure format, it is extremely difficult to open or convert without authorized access. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data. Just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the format, inspect the binary structure, and view unencrypted file headers. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XIA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The XIA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XIA converter.
