The .XFT file extension is primarily used as an Electronic Form Template for enterprise document management. It is most commonly associated with Adobe LiveCycle Designer (using XML Forms Architecture), Xait, and JustSystems XMetaL Author. These files contain the layout, structure, and data-binding logic required to generate standardized electronic forms for government or corporate use.
Working with .XFT files is notoriously frustrating. It is a highly specialized, proprietary format that typically requires a paid enterprise software license to open or edit natively. Users who receive an .XFT file often discover it cannot be opened by standard web browsers or consumer word processors. Without the original authoring environment, accessing the visual form layout is nearly impossible.
To make the data usable, you must convert the .XFT file. The most practical target formats are PDF for universal document viewing and form filling, or XML to extract the underlying raw structure and data schemas. Converting to DOCX is sometimes attempted, but usually destroys the complex data-binding layers and conditional logic embedded in the template.
