The .XEM file extension is heavily fragmented and serves entirely different purposes depending on its origin. Most often, it functions as a compiled executable module (internally structured as an EXE) for Chaos Corona Renderer or as a debugger plugin for the open-source x64dbg software. Because these are proprietary, compiled binaries, they are strictly tied to their host applications and are completely unreadable outside of them. However, .XEM is also famously used as a proprietary video export format by security surveillance systems like Xeoma and network cameras from Axis Communications.
The real-world disadvantages of proprietary surveillance video formats are immense. They rarely play natively on standard media players, operating systems, or web browsers without installing bloated, manufacturer-specific viewing software. They lack universal codec support, leaving users deeply frustrated when attempting to share crucial security footage with law enforcement, insurance companies, or legal teams.
For video use cases, conversion is almost mandatory. For web viewing and broad device compatibility, convert the surveillance video to MP4. For long-term archiving, convert to MKV, and for legacy Windows systems, convert to AVI. Note that if your file is an executable plugin module, conversion to media formats is impossible as it contains compiled code, not video data.
