About XBC files

The .XBC file extension is a legacy gallery format developed by SMART Technologies for their SMART Notebook interactive whiteboard software. It functions as a digital container that holds organized collections of teaching materials, including clip art, audio, video, notes, and older NBK files. To open or manage these files natively, users traditionally relied on older versions of the SMART Notebook application. The main disadvantage of .XBC files is that they are an outdated, closed, and proprietary format. Modern standard operating systems cannot open them natively, and they require a paid or legacy SMART Board software installation. This makes the files highly inaccessible for educators who have upgraded their hardware, moved to cloud platforms like Google Classroom, or lost access to their original software licenses. Converting an .XBC file typically means extracting its embedded media assets rather than doing a 1-to-1 conversion. The best approach is converting the internal assets to standard formats like JPG or PNG for images, and MP3 or MP4 for media. Note that the interactive whiteboard logic, specific positioning data, and animations will be lost when moving away from the SMART ecosystem. Because this is a closed, proprietary archive format, standard online converters usually fail to process it. Only the original software can properly render the interactive lessons and proprietary XML metadata. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XBC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
