The .wspak file is a server backup archive created by WebsitePanel, an open-source hosting control panel for Windows servers. It packages website source files, IIS server configurations, and SQL Server databases into a single, manageable container used for server migration or disaster recovery.
The main disadvantage of the .wspak format is its proprietary lock-in. It is heavily tied to the WebsitePanel ecosystem (or its modern forks like SolidCP). If you migrate your hosting to a Linux server or switch to alternative panels like cPanel or Plesk, this file becomes an opaque, unusable block of data. You cannot natively import a .wspak file into a different server environment.
To safely access your data, extracting the contents is the best workaround. Because the .wspak is fundamentally a compressed container, converting or extracting it to standard ZIP is the most practical target format. Once extracted, you can manually recover standard SQL database dumps, XML configuration files, and raw HTML/PHP scripts.
Opening and converting these files is notoriously difficult because they are closed, proprietary backup formats designed only to be read by the original control panel software. Standard online converters usually fail to process them because they do not understand the proprietary XML directory manifests inside the package.
