The .wp2 extension represents two primary, highly challenging file types: WebP 2 experimental images developed by Google and obsolete WordPerfect 2 documents from the early 1990s. Occasionally, it is also used for 2D mathematical graphs created in the legacy Winplot utility or as data packages for games like Wipeout Pure.
Opening .wp2 files is notoriously difficult. WebP 2 was designed as a next-generation image codec but remains an unfinished, unreleased experiment. Consequently, it is not supported by mainstream web browsers or standard image editors. WordPerfect 2 files are deeply obsolete, relying on outdated text encoding methods that cause modern word processors to display garbled characters instead of formatted text.
The massive disadvantage of the .wp2 format is this extreme lack of compatibility. If you have a WebP 2 image, you cannot publish it online or open it in Adobe Photoshop; it must be converted to JPG, PNG, or standard WEBP. If you possess a WordPerfect 2 document, it is essentially locked inside a 30-year-old software ecosystem unless converted to a modern DOCX or PDF format.
Because these formats are highly experimental or closed off, standard online converters often fail to process them.
