About WP2 files
The .wp2 extension presents a unique challenge because it typically belongs to one of two discontinued or experimental ecosystems, making these files notoriously difficult to open.
Most commonly, a .wp2 file is a 2D mathematical graph created by Winplot, a widely used but now-defunct graphing utility originally developed by Rick Parris at Phillips Exeter Academy. These files store coordinate data, equations, and visual plotting settings. Since Winplot is no longer actively maintained or distributed, users often find themselves with "locked" graph data that modern math software (like GeoGebra) cannot natively import. The proprietary nature of the format means you often need the specific legacy executable just to view the content.
Alternatively, your file might be a WebP 2 image. This was an experimental next-generation image format developed by Google intended to succeed WebP. However, WebP 2 was never fully standardized or adopted by web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari), and development largely shifted toward AVIF and improving the original WebP. Consequently, these files act as digital "dead weight" - highly compressed images that no standard image viewer or browser can display.
Best Conversion Targets:
- For Winplot Graphs: Convert to PDF to preserve the vector lines and equations for academic papers, printing, or archiving. If you need to embed the graph in a web page, convert to SVG (vector) or high-resolution PNG.
- For WebP 2 Images: You must convert these to standard WebP, JPG, or PNG to make them viewable. Convert to PNG if you need to retain transparency and lossless quality, or JPG for maximum compatibility.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WP2 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted W2P, WP3, ISI and LG? files.
The WP2 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WP2 converter.
