To convert other file formats to the "Legacy Word Processor Document" file type, you need software like WriteNow or a similar tool.
About WN files
A .WN file is typically a WriteNow Document created by the obsolete WriteNow word processor, which was popular on early Apple Macintosh and NeXT computers. Less commonly, it serves as an internal web file for the deprecated WN web server.
The primary disadvantage of the .WN format is extreme obsolescence. WriteNow has not been updated since the late 1990s. Modern word processors, including Microsoft Word and Apple Pages, completely lack the necessary file filters to read .WN documents. The files utilize legacy binary formatting and rely on historical Mac OS text encoding standards, making them unreadable as plain text. Transferring these files from legacy media often results in data corruption if the classic Mac OS "resource fork" is stripped.
To access the content today, conversion is essential. For continued editing or modern use, convert your .WN file to DOCX or RTF. If the goal is permanent preservation, convert to PDF or .PDF/A. Be aware that complex legacy formatting, such as specific pagination or early graphic embeddings, may be lost during the text extraction process.
