About WK3 files
A .WK3 file is a legacy spreadsheet created by Lotus 1-2-3 (Release 3), once the dominant spreadsheet software for DOS and early Windows.
While historically significant for introducing "3D spreadsheets" (the ability to hold multiple tabbed sheets in one file), this format is now effectively obsolete. The primary disadvantage of .WK3 files today is severe incompatibility. Modern versions of Microsoft Excel (specifically versions 2013 and later) have completely removed the import filters required to open Lotus 1-2-3 files. Consequently, users attempting to open these archives often encounter "File format not valid" errors, leaving valuable historical data locked away.
To retrieve your data, conversion is usually mandatory. For continued editing in modern environments, convert your .WK3 to XLSX (standard Excel) or ODS (OpenDocument). If you need to import the raw numbers into a database or script, CSV is the cleanest target. For archiving visual records of the spreadsheet without needing software to view them, convert to PDF.

The WK3 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WK3 converter.
