About WERD files

A .werd file is a user document, image, or database that has been maliciously encrypted by the Werd ransomware, a variant of the widespread STOP/Djvu ransomware family. Specialized decryption software, such as the Emsisoft Decryptor for STOP Djvu, is required to restore the original data, provided the encryption used an offline key. Standard file conversion is completely impossible because the internal file structure is scrambled using advanced cryptographic algorithms. Renaming the extension back to JPG or DOCX will only result in a corrupted file error. Standard online converters fail because they expect a readable, standardized file header, which the ransomware has overwritten with encrypted data blocks. Therefore, you cannot convert this file to standard media formats directly; the only viable target is its pre-infection state via cryptographic decryption. This is a closed, maliciously locked format. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible, though highly unlikely for fully encrypted data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your WERD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The WERD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WERD converter.
