The .WDMON file is a proprietary Wireless Diagnostics Monitor File created by Apple for macOS. It logs Wi-Fi network performance, dropped packets, and connectivity anomalies over a period of time.
Users generate and open these files using the built-in macOS Wireless Diagnostics tool. You can access this application by holding the Option key and clicking the Wi-Fi icon in the macOS menu bar.
The major disadvantage of the .WDMON format is its strict restriction to the macOS ecosystem. It is a proprietary format that cannot be natively opened on Windows or Linux. Parsing the internal data requires specific Apple tools. This limitation causes serious compatibility roadblocks when sharing diagnostic data with third-party network engineers or IT support staff who use different operating systems.
To make this data accessible, the best approach is to convert or extract the embedded data into standard target formats like TXT, LOG, or PCAP (Packet Capture). Note that some proprietary Apple formatting or metadata may be lost during extraction.
