Extract text from WCH files
To convert your WCH file to another format, you need Tag Agent or other Data software.
To convert other file formats to the "Telemetry Log" file type, you need software like Tag Agent or a similar tool.
A .wch file is primarily a Wildlife Computers Hexadecimal file, a proprietary raw data format used in animal telemetry and tracking. These binary files are generated by Wildlife Computers data logging tags (such as SPLASH or TOW tags) and contain encoded sensor readings, including depth, temperature, light levels, and Fastloc GPS coordinates.
Because the file stores data in a raw hexadecimal structure to save storage space on the tracking device, it is completely unreadable by standard text editors, Microsoft Excel, or third-party GIS software like QGIS. Users often encounter these files when downloading data from a recovered tag or retrieving archives from the Argos satellite system.
To make the data usable, the .wch file must be "decoded" or converted. The only reliable method to convert a .wch file is using the official Wildlife Computers Tag Agent software or the cloud-based Wildlife Computers Data Portal. These tools process the raw hex dump and export it into human-readable formats like CSV (for spreadsheets), KML (for Google Earth), or GPX.
*Note: In rare legacy contexts, a .wch file may be a WordPerfect for Windows Macro Facility file created by Corel software, used to automate document tasks.*
