The .WCH file is a proprietary data format generated by animal tracking and telemetry tags manufactured by Wildlife Computers. These files contain raw, logged sensor data including GPS coordinates, temperature readings, dive depths, and light-level geolocation records collected from marine or terrestrial wildlife over long deployments.
To interact with these files natively, researchers must use the official Tag Agent software or upload them to the Wildlife Computers Data Portal.
The main disadvantage of the .WCH format is its strictly closed and proprietary structure. You cannot open a .WCH file directly in standard data analysis tools like Microsoft Excel, R, or QGIS. Sharing raw .WCH files with collaborators who do not have an active account or the specific software installed creates significant workflow bottlenecks. To actually use the logged telemetry data, users must decode and convert the file into universal target formats like CSV (for spreadsheets and statistical models), KML (for Google Earth), or standard TXT.
