About WBOX files
The .WBOX file format is primarily used to store game map data for Wurm Online, Wurm Unlimited, and WorldBox. In Wurm titles, these files contain highly detailed terrain topography, server variables, and item coordinate data required to load a multiplayer server. The major disadvantage of the .WBOX format is its proprietary, closed nature. These files are typically compressed using raw zlib data streams. They lack standard archive headers, meaning standard extraction tools like 7-Zip or WinRAR cannot open them directly. This makes them extremely difficult to view or edit outside of specialized, community-built modding tools. Users often need to convert these files into standard PNG heightmaps to edit terrain visually, or extract the contents into JSON or XML formats for raw data manipulation. Because this file format is essentially a closed black box, generic file converters will always fail to process it. The data can normally only be read properly by the original game engines. Our analyzer can inspect the internal binary structure and often detect the underlying zlib compression. This allows you to view embedded text strings or extract the embedded data streams, bypassing standard file restrictions.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WBOX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The WBOX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WBOX converter.
