About WA_ files
A .wa_ file is not a standard audio file you can play immediately; it is a compressed artifact typically found on older Windows installation media, driver disks, or system recovery partitions. The underscore at the end of the extension is a specific Microsoft naming convention indicating that the file is a compressed version of a WAV file, packed using Microsoft's Cabinet (CAB) or LZ77 compression algorithms to save critical disk space. Because the file header and data are compressed, standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player cannot recognize or play the audio stream. To utilize the sound, the file must be "expanded" - restoring it to its full size and original WAV extension. While tech-savvy users might use the command-line expand utility, most users simply need to convert the file to a usable format. For editing and high-fidelity listening, the target format should be WAV. For web use or archiving, converting the expanded stream to MP3 or AAC is recommended to reduce file size without the proprietary lock-in of the installation container.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WA_ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert WA_ file to MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS, ALAC, APE or WV, you can use Microsoft Windows or similar software from the "Compressed Installation Audio" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to WA_, try Microsoft Windows or another comparable tool in the "Compressed Installation Audio" category.
The WA_ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WA_ converter.
