Convert a file to WA_

To convert other file formats to the "Legacy Installation Archive" file type, you need software like Microsoft Windows or a similar tool.

About WA_ files

The .wa_ file extension represents a compressed WAV (Waveform Audio) file. It uses the legacy Microsoft Cabinet (CAB) or LZ77 compression algorithms. These files were heavily utilized in older versions of Microsoft Windows (such as Windows 3.1, 95, and 98) to save space on installation floppy disks and CD-ROMs.

You cannot play a .wa_ file directly. You must first decompress it using the Windows command-line utility expand.exe or a third-party archive tool like 7-Zip. Once extracted, the file becomes a standard uncompressed WAV file.

The primary disadvantage of the .wa_ format is that it is essentially a closed, obsolete system archive. Modern media players, web browsers, and mobile devices cannot read the compressed audio stream inside the container. If you simply rename the extension to wav, the file will remain compressed and will fail to open.

The immediate conversion target is an uncompressed WAV file. From there, users typically convert the audio to modern, lightweight formats like MP3 or AAC for broad device compatibility and internet distribution.

Because this file is a compressed installation archive rather than a standard audio file, regular online audio converters will fail to process it. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view its internal structure, and convert it when possible. convert.guru can inspect the archive headers, identify the Microsoft compression method, and if supported, extract the underlying audio for viewing or conversion.

Convert.Guru analyzes your WA_ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted WMA, MIDI and WMDB files.
