About W51 files

A .W51 file is primarily a legacy document created by WordPerfect 5.1, the dominant DOS-based word processor released in 1989. These files store formatted text, relying on a unique architecture of "start" and "end" tags known internally as Reveal Codes. While once the gold standard for legal and government typing, the format is now obsolete.

The primary problem with .W51 files is compatibility. Because they were designed for MS-DOS, modern operating systems like Windows 11 or macOS do not recognize them natively. Opening a .W51 file in a standard text editor (like Notepad) results in a mix of readable text and gibberish binary control characters. Even modern versions of Microsoft Word often block these files by default due to security restrictions on legacy file converters, or import them with shattered formatting.

To retrieve the content, the best approach is conversion. If you need to edit the document, convert it to DOCX or RTF. For legal archiving or read-only access, convert to PDF. In rare cases (approx. 8%), a .W51 file may be a compressed archive used by the Canadian SEDAR system for securities filings, which requires specialized decompression tools.

Convert.Guru analyzes your W51 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
