About VWL files

The .VWL file extension is primarily a SCADA Audit Trail Database used by Schneider Electric CitectSCADA. Internally, these files are built on the Microsoft Jet Database Engine (JetDB), meaning they share architectural similarities with legacy Microsoft Access databases. Other software uses the .VWL extension for entirely different purposes. For example, Schoolhouse Technologies uses it for Vocabulary Worksheet List files (which are formatted as XML), and PTC uses it for Vuforia Word Lists. Because the primary CitectSCADA format is essentially a closed, proprietary database, it creates significant vendor lock-in. You cannot open a SCADA .VWL file in standard text editors or web browsers. If you do not have an active CitectSCADA runtime or a compatible Microsoft Access setup, your audit data remains trapped. Native JetDB formats are also prone to corruption if accessed improperly by third-party tools. To analyze or archive the data, the best approach is to convert the .VWL file to an open format like CSV, XML, or TXT. However, standard online converters usually fail because parsing proprietary Jet databases requires specialized drivers.
