Convert VMWAREVM to another file type
To convert VMWAREVM virtual machines to another format, you need VMware Fusion or other Disk Image software.
Convert a file to VMWAREVM
To convert other file formats to the "Virtual Machine Package" file type, you need software like VMware Fusion or a similar tool.
About VMWAREVM files
A .vmwarevm file is a macOS package directory used by VMware Fusion to store a complete virtual machine. Rather than a single file, it is a bundle that contains virtual hard disk images (vmdk), configuration settings (vmx), BIOS state data (nvram), and memory snapshots.
Users typically need to convert or extract these files when migrating from macOS to Windows, or moving away from the VMware ecosystem to alternative hypervisors like VirtualBox or Hyper-V. The primary disadvantage of the .vmwarevm format is its strict OS dependency; Windows operating systems do not natively recognize macOS bundles and treat them as generic folders. Furthermore, these files easily exceed 50GB, making storage and transfer highly impractical.
When migrating, the best conversion targets are the open-standard OVF or OVA formats. If moving specifically to Microsoft environments, extracting and converting the internal virtual disk to VHD or VHDX is the standard path. Note that migrating between hypervisors frequently causes guest OS driver conflicts and requires reinstalling virtualization tools.
This file format is difficult to convert directly because it is a closed, proprietary directory disguised as a single file. Standard online converters fail to process it due to massive file sizes and the complex bundle structure. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VMWAREVM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert VMWAREVM file to ISO, IMG, DMG, VHD, VMDK, VDI, HDD, QCOW, QCOW2, RAW, VBOX or OVA, you can use VMware Fusion or similar software from the "Virtual Machine Bundle Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert VFD, DMG, OVA, IMA, VBOX, ADF, PVS, VHD, OVF, ISO, DSK or IMG files to VMWAREVM, try VMware Fusion or another comparable tool in the "Virtual Machine Bundle Storage" category.
The VMWAREVM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VMWAREVM converter.
