About VMDF files

The .vmdf file extension primarily represents a Personal Secure Drive container created by EgisTec BioExcess software. This software is frequently bundled with laptop fingerprint scanners to create encrypted, hidden vaults for sensitive user data. Alternatively, a .vmdf file can function as a Virtual Machine Data File used by virtualization software like VMware to store hardware configuration or disk states. Both variations act as complex storage containers rather than standard flat documents. Users usually want to convert or extract data from .vmdf files when moving to a new computer, abandoning outdated biometric software, or trying to recover trapped files. The main disadvantage of the .vmdf format is its proprietary, closed nature. BioExcess containers are heavily encrypted and strictly tied to specific hardware or Windows installations.
