Convert VMDF to another file type
To convert VMDF archives to another format, you need VMware or other Disk Image software.
Convert a file to VMDF
To convert other file formats to the "Encrypted Drive or VM Disk" file type, you need software like VMware or a similar tool.
About VMDF files
The .vmdf file extension primarily represents a Personal Secure Drive container created by EgisTec BioExcess software. This software is frequently bundled with laptop fingerprint scanners to create encrypted, hidden vaults for sensitive user data. Alternatively, a .vmdf file can function as a Virtual Machine Data File used by virtualization software like VMware to store hardware configuration or disk states. Both variations act as complex storage containers rather than standard flat documents. Users usually want to convert or extract data from .vmdf files when moving to a new computer, abandoning outdated biometric software, or trying to recover trapped files. The main disadvantage of the .vmdf format is its proprietary, closed nature. BioExcess containers are heavily encrypted and strictly tied to specific hardware or Windows installations. If the software breaks or the fingerprint reader fails, accessing the contents becomes nearly impossible. VMware data files similarly require bulky, expensive virtualization software to read. Because these are secure containers or raw virtual machine data blocks, direct conversion to a standard format is impossible without unlocking them first. The ultimate goal is to mount the .vmdf file using its native software and extract the internal files to universal formats like PDF, JPG, or DOCX. Standard online converters fail with .vmdf files because they lack the decryption keys and virtualization engines required to parse the proprietary file systems. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. While we cannot bypass hardware encryption, our deep analysis tool can inspect the file headers to confirm exactly which type of .vmdf you have. If our analysis detects an unencrypted underlying or embedded format, viewing or extracting specific components may still be possible on convert.guru.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VMDF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
FAQ
If you want to convert VMDF file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use VMware or similar software from the "Secure Container or VM Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to VMDF, try VMware or another comparable tool in the "Secure Container or VM Data" category.
The VMDF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VMDF converter.
