About VG files

The .VG file is an XML-based vector graphic used in Human-Machine Interface (HMI) screens for industrial automation. It is primarily created and managed using AVEVA CitectSCADA and its VisualGraphics Designer. The biggest disadvantage of the .VG format is its strict dependency on a closed industrial ecosystem. You cannot natively open these files in standard vector editors like Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape. The SCADA-specific XML tags prevent web browsers from rendering the graphics, meaning you cannot easily share screen designs with stakeholders who lack an expensive AVEVA license. For general viewing, converting .VG to SVG is the ideal target because both formats rely on XML structures. If you need static documentation, convert them to PNG or PDF. Note that interactive HMI elements, such as animated gauges tied to live PLC data, will be lost during export. This file format is extremely difficult to open or convert using generic tools. Standard online converters fail to process it because they lack parsers for proprietary industrial schemas.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PNG, DS4, ILL, IMAGE001 and GFA files.

The VG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VG converter.
