About VDX files

The .VDX file extension represents a Visio XML Drawing, a vector-based diagram format introduced by Microsoft with Visio 2002. Unlike the older binary VSD format, VDX stores diagram data - shapes, connectors, and metadata - as plain text XML. While this was intended to make the files more interoperable and readable by external scripts, in practice, .VDX files suffer from significant bloat. Because they lack the compression found in the modern VSDX standard (introduced in Visio 2013), a complex VDX diagram can easily become unwieldy in size, slowing down transfer speeds and consuming excessive storage.

A major friction point for users is that .VDX is effectively a legacy bridge format. Modern versions of Microsoft Visio default to VSDX, and while they can still open VDX files, support in third-party tools is inconsistent. Furthermore, users often receive these files without owning a Visio license, which is expensive and platform-restricted. To bypass these limitations, the pragmatic solution is conversion. For editing in modern software, convert .VDX to VSDX. For archiving or sharing with colleagues who do not have diagramming software, PDF is the standard. If you need to embed the diagram on a webpage or preserve scalability without the proprietary lock-in, converting to SVG is highly recommended. For quick visual references, a raster format like PNG or JPG is often sufficient.

The VDX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VDX converter.
