About VDX files
A .VDX file is primarily a Visio XML Drawing created by older versions of Microsoft Visio to store complex vector-based diagrams, flowcharts, and network layouts using a structured XML format. While introduced to make Visio data more readable for third-party programs, raw XML files are often heavily bloated and consume significant disk space compared to modern compressed formats. The main disadvantage of the .VDX format is its proprietary ecosystem. Viewing or editing a .VDX document natively requires an expensive paid subscription to Microsoft Visio or specialized viewing software. Web browsers and default operating system image viewers cannot open these files natively. Standard online converters often fail to process .VDX files because rendering proprietary Microsoft vector objects requires specialized rendering engines that accurately interpret the internal XML schema. To share these diagrams with clients or colleagues, you must convert the .VDX file to a universal format. The best conversion targets are .PDF for fixed-layout document sharing, or .VSDX if the recipient uses a modern version of Visio. For web embedding, converting to .SVG or .PNG is ideal. Be aware that converting complex diagrams to raster images like .JPG will result in a loss of scaleable vector data and interactive hyperlinks. In rare cases, a .VDX file may act as a proprietary video surveillance index file for the ViconNet DVR system, which does not contain video data and cannot be converted to standard video formats. Because .VDX is a heavily structured proprietary format, it is notoriously difficult to open or convert flawlessly outside of the original software. Often, only Microsoft Visio can properly read or export the exact styling and data layers. However, convert.guru provides a pragmatic solution: just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view its text or internal structure, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion to common formats may still be possible.

To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to VDX, try Microsoft Visio or another comparable tool in the "Vector Flowchart Diagram Storage" category.
The VDX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VDX converter.
