About VCL files

The .vcl file extension is shared by several highly specialized, proprietary data formats. Most commonly, it acts as a project file for Trimble Business Center, storing complex construction, geospatial, and survey data. Other frequent industry uses include vehicle library configuration files in Transoft Solutions AutoTURN, data logs from Oxford Instruments VeriCold equipment, and saved queries in Cerner Visual Explorer.

The core problem with .vcl files is their closed, proprietary nature. They are strictly bound to expensive, industry-specific software ecosystems. You cannot natively open a Trimble .vcl file to extract coordinate geometry without Trimble software, nor can you easily read AutoTURN vehicle parameters without the specific CAD plugin. Standard file viewers and online converters completely fail to process them because the data structures are undocumented and require a specific licensed engine to interpret the 3D models or encrypted logs.

To share this data collaboratively, you usually must use the original software to export the .vcl content to standard targets. Trimble users should export geometry to DXF, DWG, or XML for broader CAD compatibility, while VeriCold logs should be exported to CSV for spreadsheet analysis. Because this file format is difficult to open or convert online, standard tools hit a wall. However, just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to see what it is and convert it if supported. convert.guru can identify the exact format version, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as the Microsoft Compound structure used in Cerner files - viewing or partial extraction may still be possible without the expensive original license.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VCL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GGF, TXL and MJF files.

The VCL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VCL converter.
