About VBD files

The .VBD file extension is most notoriously associated with Visual Basic ActiveX Documents, a relic of the late 90s software ecosystem developed by Microsoft. These files are structured as Microsoft Compound Files (OLE) and were originally designed to let Visual Basic 6.0 applications run inside containers like Internet Explorer or Microsoft Office binder documents.

The Core Problem: The technology powering these files, ActiveX, has been deprecated and aggressively blocked by modern security protocols due to vulnerabilities. Opening a .VBD file on Windows 10 or 11 is virtually impossible without running a virtual machine with Windows 98 or XP. They are proprietary binary blobs that modern code editors cannot interpret, and modern web browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox) will treat them as unsafe downloads rather than displayable content.

Alternate Formats: You might also encounter this extension as a Barcode Verification Report generated by LVS/Axicon systems (used for quality control logs) or a Dutch Corporate Tax Return file used by the Belastingdienst.

The VBD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VBD converter.
