The .vbb extension primarily serves two distinct technical communities, creating significant confusion. The most common variation (approx. 65%) is a Video Bounding Box data file generated by Piotr's Computer Vision Toolbox for MATLAB. These files store ground-truth annotations (rectangles defining objects in video frames) used to train machine learning models.
The catch with these MATLAB-based .vbb files is their proprietary binary format; they are essentially renamed MAT files that cannot be opened natively in Python, OpenCV, or standard text editors. To use this data in modern frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch, users must convert the .vbb binary data into open formats like JSON, XML (Pascal VOC style), or CSV.
The second common type is a Virtual Breadboard Project file used by Virtual Breadboard (VBB) for prototyping microcontroller circuits. Newer versions of these files are often ZIP-compressed archives containing XML definitions and assets, while older versions are proprietary binaries. Sharing these designs with users who do not own the specific VBB software version is difficult. For documentation and sharing, converting these circuit designs to PDF schematics or PNG images is standard practice. Less frequently, .vbb may refer to Racelogic VBOX telemetry data, which usually requires conversion to CSV or KML for analysis in standard mapping tools.
