About VAP files
The .vap file extension is highly fragmented and used by several completely different applications, making it notoriously difficult to handle. Most frequently, it acts as a Game Data Asset (Video and Audio Package) for the MMORPG Dragon Nest, storing encrypted textures and audio. In the gaming and productivity space, .vap files are widely used as Voice Command Profiles by VoiceAttack, allowing users to back up custom macro mappings in an underlying XML format. Furthermore, Tencent utilizes .vap for its Video Animation Player, wrapping MP4 video streams with an alpha channel (transparency) for UI animations in mobile apps like WeChat. Finally, the VR sandbox Virt-A-Mate (VaM) uses .vap files as JSON-based character appearance presets.
This fragmentation causes significant headaches. You cannot simply double-click a .vap file and expect Windows or macOS to know what to do. Game assets are usually locked, proprietary archives that exceed gigabytes in size and offer no official extraction tools. VoiceAttack profiles are tied to a specific local software installation. Tencent's transparent animations are technically MP4 files but use custom headers that confuse standard media players like VLC, often resulting in black backgrounds or playback errors.
To make these files usable, format analysis and conversion are strictly necessary. For VoiceAttack profiles, extracting the underlying data to XML allows you to read and edit the macros in any text editor. If you are dealing with a Tencent Video Animation, converting the .vap file to standard WebM or MP4 with alpha support is essential to restore playback compatibility for web environments and standard video editors like Adobe Premiere Pro.

The VAP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VAP converter.
