About VAF files

The .VAF file extension serves two distinct, high-friction purposes that often leave users confused. Most commonly, it acts as a Video Animation File generated by Barco for their high-end image processing hardware (like the Encore or ScreenPRO-II systems). These files are optimized for LED video walls and large-scale projection events. The major disadvantage here is strict proprietary lock-in; a .VAF file is effectively a "black box" to standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player. You cannot simply double-click to view the content, making it difficult for event coordinators to preview animations without access to the physical processor or specific Barco Event Master software.

Alternatively, in scientific and laboratory settings, a .VAF file is a Viscotek Analysis File used by Malvern Panalytical (formerly Viscotek) instruments. These files contain chromatographic data from OmniSEC software. The practical constraint here is data accessibility; researchers often need this data in universal formats like CSV or XLSX for graphing in Microsoft Excel, but the .VAF is often a compressed binary wrapper. Interestingly, these analysis files are frequently just renamed GZIP archives.
