About UT8 files

The .ut8 file is a specialized localization and language data container exclusively used by the 2003 strategy game Ghost Master, originally developed by Sick Puppies. These files store thousands of in-game text strings, including character dialogue, subtitles, and user interface elements, allowing the game engine to render various regional languages natively. At its core, the file is a plain text document saved with strict UTF-8 encoding to support international characters.

Modders and translators typically interact with these files using advanced text editors like Notepad++ or Visual Studio Code. However, managing translation data directly within a raw .ut8 file presents significant disadvantages. Because it is a highly proprietary extension tied to an obsolete game, standard operating systems and modern software completely ignore it. If you send a .ut8 file to a professional translator, their specialized Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools will refuse to import the data. Additionally, accidentally saving the file with the wrong text encoding (such as ANSI or UTF-16) will instantly corrupt the game's text rendering.

To bypass these frustrating limits, converting the .ut8 file to widely supported formats like TXT, CSV, or JSON is highly recommended. By converting the raw localization strings into a structured format like CSV, you can easily manage, filter, and collaborate on translations using standard spreadsheet software without risking critical file corruption.

Unfortunately, generic online file converters fail to process .ut8 files because the extension is virtually unknown outside the retro-gaming modding community. They rely strictly on recognizing common extensions rather than analyzing internal file contents.

Convert.Guru analyzes your UT8 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
