About UNX files

The .UNX file format is most commonly an Interactive Fiction game file compiled for the Glulx virtual machine, typically created with the Inform design system. In enterprise environments, .UNX is also widely used as an SAP BusinessObjects Information Design Tool (IDT) Universe file, which acts as a semantic layer mapping complex databases. Finally, a small percentage of .UNX files are simply plain Unix Text files.

To play a .UNX game, you need a specialized interpreter like Gargoyle or Lectrote. For SAP files, the SAP BusinessObjects Information Design Tool is strictly required.

Users often seek to convert .UNX files because they encounter intense software friction. The game files are compiled binary blobs, meaning they cannot be opened by standard text editors or document software, effectively locking the story and logic inside a proprietary virtual machine format. Similarly, SAP Universe files are closed enterprise assets. Plain Unix Text files cause headaches because they use a single Line Feed (LF) character, which displays as one broken, unformatted line in older Windows Notepad versions.

If you have a plain Unix Text file, your best conversion targets are standard TXT, PDF, or DOCX formats. However, standard online converters fail to process most .UNX files because they are typically compiled game binaries or proprietary enterprise database maps. Generic converters cannot parse the internal binary structure of a Glulx virtual machine or an SAP metadata layer.

Because this file format is heavily closed, often only the original software can properly read or export the data. Despite this, just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. We can still inspect the file and show raw text strings or internal metadata. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded text format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your UNX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TXT, NOW, OLI, U2P and UNV files.

The UNX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our UNX converter.
