About UNX files

The .unx extension identifies two distinct file types, causing frequent confusion. The most common (75%) is a compiled Interactive Fiction game file designed for the Glulx virtual machine. These are rich, text-based adventure games (often created with Inform) that contain a story, logic, and sometimes multimedia. Users typically encounter friction here because .unx files are binary blobs that cannot be opened by standard text editors or game players; they require a specific interpreter like Gargoyle or Lectrote to function. The file effectively "locks" the game content inside a proprietary format, making it impossible to read or print the story without the correct software.

Secondary to this (0.9%), a .unx file may be a raw Unix Text File (often named readme.unx). These are simple text documents that use Line Feed (LF) characters for line breaks, which can cause formatting errors (the "text in one long line" bug) when opened in standard Windows Notepad.

Conversion Best Practices:

Convert.Guru analyzes your UNX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TXT, NOW, OLI, U2P and UNV files.
