The .ulaw file is a raw audio data stream encoded using the µ-law (mu-law) companding algorithm, standardized under CCITT G.711. It is predominantly used in North American and Japanese digital telecommunications systems, such as PBX networks and legacy voicemail systems, to store and transmit voice data efficiently. To open these files locally, you typically need an advanced audio editor like Audacity utilizing the "Import Raw Data" function, or a command-line utility like FFmpeg.
The primary disadvantage of the .ulaw format is its complete lack of a file header. Because it is raw data, standard consumer media players cannot automatically detect its sample rate (usually 8 kHz), bit depth (8-bit), or channel count (usually Mono). If you try to play it directly, it will often fail to open or output deafening white noise. Furthermore, µ-law is heavily optimized for human speech frequencies; it has terrible fidelity for music or general sound effects.
