About UGR files

The .UGR file extension represents an Apophysis Ultra Fractal Gradient File. It is primarily used by fractal generation programs like Apophysis and Ultra Fractal. These files do not store standard image pixels. Instead, they act as configuration files that store a custom color palette - a collection of color nodes, RGB values, and gradient inversion settings. When mathematical algorithms calculate a "fractal flame," the UGR file maps these mathematical densities to specific visual colors.

For the average user, receiving a .UGR file presents an immediate problem. It is a highly specialized, proprietary format. Because it is essentially a mathematical lookup table rather than an image, web browsers cannot display it, and standard graphic editors like Adobe Photoshop or GIMP will not open it. You are locked out of viewing the gradient unless you install complex, niche fractal rendering software.

Users typically want to extract these gradients and convert them into universal image formats like PNG, JPG, or standard SVG gradients. Standard online converters routinely fail at this task because they lack the specific parsing logic required to understand the esoteric UGR data structure. Our engine can inspect the plain text configuration underlying the file and extract the raw color palettes. If our analysis detects the supported underlying color nodes, viewing or converting the gradient data into a standard image may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your UGR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The UGR Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our UGR converter.
