About UEF files
The .UEF (Unified Emulator Format) is a container designed to preserve software originally stored on cassette tapes, floppy disks, or ROM cartridges for vintage 8-bit computers like the BBC Micro, Acorn Electron, and Acorn Atom. Internally, these files are often GZIP compressed archives containing specific data "chunks" that represent the magnetic flux changes or binary data of the original media.
While .UEF files are efficient for storage and widely supported by specific emulators like BeebEm and ElectrEm, they present significant usability challenges outside of that niche ecosystem. Because the format wraps raw data in a proprietary chunk structure, standard audio players cannot play the "tape" audio, and generic disk mounters cannot read the file system. Users often need to convert .UEF files to WAV (audio) to load games onto real hardware via audio cable, or to uncompressed disk images like SSD (Single Sided Disk) or DSD (Double Sided Disk) for compatibility with other emulators or FPGA solutions like the MiSTer.
Convert.Guru analyzes your UEF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The UEF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our UEF converter.
