About UED files

The .UED file is a specialized data container known as the Universal Environmental Data File, developed primarily by Washington State University. Researchers and scientists use this format to store complex environmental variables, climate models, and agricultural simulation data. Because it is an obscure academic format, finding software that natively reads .UED files is challenging outside of specific university research clusters. The format is proprietary or highly specialized, meaning standard data analysis tools like Microsoft Excel or Python libraries cannot parse it out of the box. Users typically need to convert .UED files to standard data formats like CSV, TXT, or JSON to process the data in modern statistical software. The main disadvantage of the .UED format is its lack of interoperability; sharing it with colleagues outside your specific research project usually leads to errors and unreadable data. This file format is difficult to open or convert because its internal structure is rarely documented publicly. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your UED file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The UED Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our UED converter.
