A .u2k file is not a standard document or image; it is a victim's original file that has been maliciously locked by the U2K ransomware. Ransomware operates by infiltrating a system, finding valuable files (like DOCX documents, JPG photos, or XLSX spreadsheets), and scrambling their contents using advanced cryptographic algorithms. The malware then appends the .u2k extension to the filename.
Victims desperately need to convert these files back to their original state to regain access to personal data, financial records, or business assets. However, the current format presents a massive disadvantage: it is fundamentally locked and heavily encrypted. Standard software like Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat cannot read the altered byte structure.
