About TYP files
The .TYP file extension primarily belongs to Typst, a modern, markup-based typesetting system. These plain text files contain formatting commands, equations, and content used to compile mathematical or academic documents. A secondary use is for Garmin Map Style files, which customize the appearance of GPS maps in Garmin BaseCamp or MapSource.
A .TYP file from Typst is essentially raw code. It is useless to non-technical recipients because it cannot be viewed without the Typst compiler. It lacks native support in web browsers and standard office software. Garmin .TYP files are proprietary, closed binary files that only specific GPS units and software can interpret.
You must convert Typst .TYP files to standard formats like PDF, PNG, or SVG for distribution. Otherwise, your client or colleague will just see raw markup instead of a formatted document. Garmin map files are rarely converted but instead edited with dedicated tools like TYPViewer.
Because .TYP files serve extremely niche functions - either as raw compiler instructions or proprietary GPS map themes - most standard online converters fail to process them. They lack the built-in Typst rendering engine or the binary decryption for Garmin maps. We can inspect the file and extract text or internal content even if it requires proprietary compilation.
Convert.Guru analyzes your TYP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The TYP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TYP converter.
