A .tvd file is primarily an electronic program guide (EPG) data file utilized by the open-source TV-Browser software to populate television schedules. However, the extension is highly fragmented. It is also used as a proprietary audio format for the Enmac MyQalam Digital Quran Pen, an ultrasound video data stream for Telemed and Ultrasonix clinical systems, a term vector database for Apache Lucene, and a mobile application backup container for The Vault.
The main disadvantage of .tvd files is this extreme fragmentation. Because multiple unrelated developers adopted the exact same extension, users frequently face application mismatch errors. TV-Browser EPG data is application-specific and cannot be inherently rendered by standard web browsers. Medical ultrasound records and proprietary audio formats are completely closed ecosystems requiring a specialized OEM software license to access. Standard media players like VLC or document readers will fail to open them. Users often want to convert TV-Browser schedules to XML or CSV for database integration, or proprietary media variants to MP4 and MP3.
