About TUB files
The .TUB file extension is primarily associated with Paint Shop Pro Picture Tubes, a legacy graphics format originally developed by Jasc Software and now maintained by Corel. These files function as advanced image brushes, allowing users to "spray" a sequence of raster images (like butterflies, leaves, or geometric shapes) onto a canvas rather than a single color. Internally, a .TUB file acts as a container holding a grid of cells, where each cell contains a distinct graphical object with transparency.
The catch for users is that .TUB is a proprietary, application-specific format. It cannot be opened or viewed in standard image viewers like Microsoft Photos, Preview, or web browsers. Furthermore, modern creative workflows often require assets to be compatible with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or Procreate, none of which natively support the .TUB format. This "lock-in" makes it difficult to migrate legacy design assets to new projects.
Conversion Best Practices:
For Editing/Design: Convert the .TUB file to PNG (Portable Network Graphics). This is the ideal target because it preserves the transparency (alpha channel) of the tube objects, allowing you to extract the individual graphics and use them as stamps or brushes in other software.
For Archiving: Convert to PDF if you simply need a visual catalog of what the tube file contains without needing to edit the layers.
*Note: A secondary, less common use (approx. 14%) of the .TUB extension is for project files created by TubeCAD, a niche engineering software used for designing vacuum tube audio amplifiers. These are data files, not images, and require the specific legacy TubeCAD software to interpret.*

The TUB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TUB converter.
