About TTMD files

The .TTMD file is a proprietary GPS map format created by Trail Tracker GPS, a discontinued iOS application developed by TapTools LLC. These files were primarily used by hikers, runners, and cyclists to record trail data, including geographic coordinates, elevation changes, elapsed time, average speeds, waypoints, and embedded image references. Originally introduced in version 3.0 of the app to replace the older .MSDF format, it acts as a container for detailed tracking sessions.

Because TapTools Trail Tracker GPS is no longer available on the Apple App Store, users are frequently left with orphaned .TTMD files trapped on old backups. The format is essentially dead software lock-in. You cannot natively open these files in modern mapping applications like Google Earth, Garmin BaseCamp, or Strava. This limitation makes conversion strictly necessary if you want to preserve or visualize your historical route data.

The most practical targets for conversion are standard, universally supported GIS formats like GPX (GPS Exchange Format) or KML (Keyhole Markup Language). Converting to these standard formats ensures your tracks and waypoints will map correctly across modern devices. However, because the original app bundled images directly into the tracking data, those specific media files may be lost or detached when transitioning to a purely text-based coordinate format.

Converting a .TTMD file is notoriously difficult because standard online tools do not recognize this obscure, discontinued extension. Standard converters fail to parse the app-specific schema. Fortunately, under the hood, .TTMD files are saved in an XML structure. Even if full automated routing conversion is challenging, our engine can inspect the file, reveal the underlying XML text, and help you manually extract your latitude, longitude, and elevation data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your TTMD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The TTMD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TTMD converter.
