Most commonly in modern research, it indicates a Tree Sequence Zip file, a compressed format used by the tskit Python library to store large-scale genetic ancestry and evolutionary data. These files are essentially .trees files compressed (often using gzip) to save space while retaining complex genealogical histories. Users often need to convert these to VCF (Variant Call Format) or export tables to CSV for analysis in Excel or R.

Alternatively, in the medical field, a .tsz file is a proprietary measurement or calibration file generated by Topcon ophthalmic instruments, such as the Specular Microscope or Tono-Pen. These files contain raw patient eye data or instrument calibration logs (e.g., for Topcon TSwin software). A legacy use case also exists where .tsz files are skin archives for the Trillian instant messenger, which are simply ZIP files renamed.
