.topprj files are proprietary project management files used by TopSolid, an integrated CAD/CAM software suite developed by TopSolid SAS (formerly Missler Software). They function as a structured container or index. Instead of holding raw 3D meshes, they store references to individual 3D parts, complex assemblies, drafting sheets, and manufacturing metadata.
Users often need to convert this format to share designs with clients or manufacturers who do not own an expensive TopSolid license. The current format has severe disadvantages. It is strictly proprietary, locked behind a high-cost commercial subscription, and cannot be viewed in web browsers or standard image viewers. Furthermore, if the file is separated from its linked TOP part files, the project breaks and becomes useless.
When exporting data, the best target formats are standard CAD interchange files. You should aim for STEP or IGES for solid body geometry, STL for 3D printing, or PDF for 2D drafting blueprints. Note that converting a native project file to a neutral format will permanently strip parametric constraints, feature histories, and complex CAM toolpaths.
This closed, proprietary format is notoriously difficult to open or convert outside of its native environment. Often, only the original TopSolid software can properly read the file tree or export the data. Standard online converters fail to process it.
