Convert a file to TNE
To convert other file formats to the "Screentone Pattern" file type, you need software like Clip Studio Paint or a similar tool.
About TNE files
The .TNE file format stores digital screentone patterns for Manga Studio (now known globally as Clip Studio Paint). Digital comic artists use these files to apply halftone dots, crosshatching, and other textures to their black-and-white artwork, simulating traditional screentones used in Japanese manga publishing.
The primary software used to open and manage .TNE files is Clip Studio Paint developed by Celsys. Because .TNE is a closed, proprietary format, it comes with major disadvantages. It is tightly locked into the Celsys software ecosystem, meaning you cannot view the patterns natively in standard web browsers, mobile devices, or competing illustration tools like Adobe Photoshop or Procreate. Users who do not pay for a Clip Studio subscription are completely locked out of the visual data inside the file.
Artists frequently need to convert .TNE files to standard image formats like PNG or TIFF. Converting them makes it possible to import the screentone patterns into other drawing applications as custom brushes, pattern overlays, or seamless textures.
However, extracting this texture data is notoriously difficult. The data structure is undocumented and proprietary. Standard online image converters fail to process .TNE files because they lack the specific Celsys rendering engines required to decode the pattern instructions. Often, the only native way to extract the pattern is to manually apply the tone to a blank canvas inside Clip Studio Paint and export the canvas as a standard image file. Even when direct conversion is blocked by proprietary encryption, our tool can inspect the file's hex data, expose hidden metadata, and analyze internal content. If our analysis detects an embedded standard format or a readable thumbnail, viewing or partial conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your TNE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The TNE Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TNE converter.
