About TN1 files

The .TN1 file format is a proprietary Tiny Low Resolution Image originally developed for the Atari ST line of home computers in the late 1980s. These files store 16-color raster graphics at a hardware-locked resolution of 320x200 pixels. During the 16-bit computing era, the "Tiny" format used custom run-length encoding (RLE) to heavily compress pixel data and save space on low-capacity 720KB floppy disks.

Today, the .TN1 format is entirely obsolete. You cannot open it natively with modern operating systems, web browsers, or standard image editors like Adobe Photoshop. The primary disadvantage of this format is its severe software dependency. It requires specialized retro-computing viewers like Recoil or XnView MP equipped with legacy format plugins to decode the Atari hardware-specific color palettes.

If you need to share, edit, or archive these vintage images today, you must convert the .TN1 file to a standard web-friendly format. The absolute best target format is PNG, which uses lossless compression to perfectly preserve the sharp edges and 16-color pixel art without introducing blur. GIF is another excellent lossless alternative. You should strictly avoid JPG, as its lossy compression algorithm introduces visual artifacts that ruin low-resolution pixel art.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because it relies on the specific memory mapping of the original Atari video chip. Standard online converters almost always fail to process it. However, you can use convert.guru as a pragmatic workaround. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view its internal structure, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects recognizable byte patterns or an underlying supported format, viewing or conversion may still be successful.

The TN1 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TN1 converter.
