The .TKS file extension serves multiple, highly fragmented purposes across different industries. Most commonly, it functions as a legacy keyboard mapping file for the DJ software Traktor Pro, developed by Native Instruments. In this context, it stores custom hotkeys and controller layouts in an underlying XML format. Alternatively, .TKS files act as proprietary firmware updates for Technosat satellite receivers, or shipboard tank condition data files utilized by Kockum Sonics CASP marine software.
These formats are completely incompatible with one another. The Traktor mapping file is human-readable, but without the original software, it is difficult to visualize the hardware layout. The firmware and shipboard data variants are closed binaries. Users cannot open them in standard desktop applications, and misinterpreting a firmware file carries the risk of bricking hardware devices.
