About TIE files

CrossTie Installer Files (.tie) are specialized XML configuration profiles used by CodeWeavers CrossOver to automate the installation of Windows software on macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS. These files act as "recipes," containing specific instructions - such as registry keys, dependency downloads, and configuration settings - needed to make a specific Windows application run correctly on a non-Windows system.

The biggest obstacle for users is that a .tie file is not the actual application installer (like an EXE or MSI); it is merely a small text file instructing CrossOver how to handle the installation. Users often download these expecting a full game or program, only to find a file measuring a few kilobytes that their operating system cannot open natively. Without CrossOver installed, these files are useless executables. To inspect the installation logic, verify dependencies, or debug a failing install, the best approach is to convert the file to XML or TXT. This allows you to view the underlying code in any standard text editor without needing the proprietary environment.

Convert.Guru analyzes your TIE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The TIE Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TIE converter.
