The .TGO file format is a proprietary 3D model container created specifically for Terragen by Planetside Software. It is primarily used to store 3D objects - such as trees, rocks, and buildings - along with their complex procedural shader networks and texture maps. These files are optimized to render highly realistic natural environments within the Terragen rendering engine.
This format presents significant challenges for users outside the Terragen ecosystem. The .TGO format is closed and proprietary. It does not just contain standard polygon meshes; it includes software-specific shading data that cannot be read by standard 3D modeling tools like Blender or Autodesk Maya. Users often need to convert these files to collaborate with other artists or to import assets into game engines. Because the format is closed, standard online converters fail to parse the procedural nodes correctly, resulting in broken geometry or completely missing textures.
If you need to move a .TGO asset to another application, the best target formats are OBJ or FBX. You will likely lose the procedural Terragen shaders during this process, leaving you with only the base polygon geometry and baked UV textures.
