About TFM files
A .TFM file is a binary data container that serves three distinct, incompatible purposes depending on its origin, often leading to confusion.
Unity Game Data (Primary Use): Most commonly (approx. 28%), these are serialized save files or asset data from games built with the Unity engine. They often use .NET binary serialization to store player stats, inventory, or world states. The main constraint is their proprietary binary format; you cannot open them in a text editor like Notepad without seeing garbled code. To modify game values (modding), you must convert this binary stream into a structured format like JSON or XML.
TeX Font Metrics: In the TeX typesetting ecosystem, a TFM file holds the physical dimensions (width, height, depth) and kerning data for fonts, but contains no visual glyphs. A common problem for designers is expecting to view these as standard fonts (like TTF); however, they are strictly metric data used by the compiler. To inspect them, they must be converted to human-readable Property Lists (.PL).
ITK Transforms: Used by the Insight Toolkit, these store spatial transformation matrices for medical image registration.
Recommendation:
For Editing (Game Data): Convert to JSON to parse the serialized objects, edit values, and re-serialize.
For Inspection (Fonts): Convert to PL or TXT to view ligature tables and character dimensions.
For Archiving: Convert binary datasets to XML for long-term readability.
