Convert TERX to another file type
To convert TERX documents to another format, you need RoadEng or other Cad software.
Convert a file to TERX
To convert other file formats to the "Civil Engineering Terrain Document" file type, you need software like RoadEng or a similar tool.
About TERX files
The .TERX file is a proprietary terrain design document created by RoadEng, a civil engineering software suite developed by Softree Technical Systems. These files store 3D surface models, topographical data, and alignment information used primarily for rural infrastructure and forest road design.
This format is notoriously difficult to work with outside of the Softree ecosystem. It is proprietary and closed-source, meaning you must pay for an expensive software license just to open and view the terrain models. Standard web browsers and basic CAD viewers cannot read .TERX files natively.
Users typically need to convert .TERX files to collaborate with contractors or stakeholders who use standard industry software like AutoCAD Civil 3D or MicroStation. The best target formats are .LandXML for transferring complex 3D surface geometry, or DWG and DXF for standard 2D/3D vector data. Note that converting a .TERX file often results in the loss of parametric design history and proprietary alignments, leaving you with only the static surface mesh or contour lines.
Because this file format is highly complex and closed, it is extremely difficult to open or convert with standard tools. Often, only the original RoadEng software can properly read or export the data. Our platform can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your TERX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert TERX file to DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP, IGES, SAT, X_T or X_B, you can use RoadEng or similar software from the "Terrain Design Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to TERX, try RoadEng or another comparable tool in the "Terrain Design Storage" category.
The TERX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TERX converter.
