The .ta7 file is a proprietary tax return document created by TaxAct for the 2017 tax year. It stores personal financial data, W-2 information, and completed tax forms entered by the user. Individuals typically need to access these files to review past tax filings, amend historical returns, or provide financial history during mortgage or loan applications.
This format presents significant real-world disadvantages. It is a highly proprietary, version-locked format. You cannot open a .ta7 file with the 2018 or 2026 versions of the software; you specifically need the 2017 desktop edition. The format is a completely closed ecosystem, meaning standard text editors or spreadsheet programs like Microsoft Excel cannot read it. It is also not supported by any web browser, making it difficult to view the data on modern devices without the legacy software.
The ideal target format for tax records is PDF, which guarantees long-term visual accuracy and cross-platform readability. Converting to CSV or TXT is sometimes desired for extracting raw numbers, though the official form layout will be completely lost.
Because the .ta7 format is a closed, proprietary database containing complex internal schemas, standard online converters fail to process it. Usually, only the original 2017 TaxAct software can properly render the forms and export the official data.
