The .ta6 file is a proprietary data format created by the 2016 edition of TaxAct. It contains user-entered federal and state tax information, forms, and calculation results for the 2016 tax year.
Users primarily need to convert these files because the format is highly restrictive. It is a closed, proprietary database that requires a specific, outdated software version to read. You cannot send a .ta6 file to an accountant, bank, or mortgage broker, as they will not be able to open it without purchasing and installing the 2016 software. Furthermore, these files are not supported by web browsers or standard document viewers.
