About SXLS files

.SXLS files are Sealed Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets protected by Oracle Information Rights Management (IRM). They are essentially standard Excel files wrapped in a secure, encrypted shell designed to restrict unauthorized viewing, copying, or printing. Enterprise companies use this format to lock down sensitive financial data, intellectual property, and internal reports.

To open a .SXLS file, users typically need Microsoft Excel with the Oracle IRM Desktop plugin installed, alongside active credentials to authenticate with the corporate rights server.

This format presents severe challenges for everyday data workflows. Because it is a proprietary, closed format, it cannot be previewed in web browsers, easily shared with external partners, or processed by standard Python or R data extraction scripts. Users are locked into the Oracle ecosystem and must maintain an active connection to a licensing server. The primary disadvantage is that if the authentication server goes offline or access rights expire, the data becomes completely inaccessible.

The most practical conversion targets are standard XLSX or CSV files. Converting to CSV strips away all formatting and formulas but provides universally readable raw data. Converting to XLSX preserves the spreadsheet structure while removing the restrictive Oracle wrapper.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because standard online tools cannot bypass enterprise-grade cryptographic sealing. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects an unsealed embedded format or a structural error, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SXLS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SXML, S1E and S1G files.
