About SWX files

The .SWX extension represents a collision between legacy office documents and modern security hardware, creating significant confusion for users. Most commonly, this file is a legacy StarOffice Writer document, a precursor to the modern Open Document Format (.ODT). These files are essentially ZIP archives containing XML data, originally created by Sun Microsystems software. Because the standard extension was SXW, files ending in .SWX are often mislabeled or result from specific regional versions of the software, causing modern tools like Microsoft Word to reject them as corrupt or unrecognized.

Alternatively, in industrial and security contexts, an .SWX file may be a firmware update package for ZKTeco FaceGate access control terminals. These are binary blobs that cannot be opened or edited on a PC; they are designed exclusively to be flashed onto hardware via USB or network tools. Less frequently, it may be a session view file for Siemens ODB++ viewer software. If it detects a document structure, we recommend converting it immediately to PDF for preservation or DOCX for editing, as support for these legacy formats is disappearing from even open-source tools.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SWX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SXW, WPS, SX and OTT files.
