About SW3 files
The .SW3 extension primarily identifies screenplay documents created with Scriptware, a legacy screenwriting application developed by Cinovation, Inc. popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s. These files contain formatted scripts - including scene headings, character names, dialogue, and parentheticals - stored in a proprietary binary format designed for older Windows environments.
Why convert it? The main challenge with .SW3 files is the "digital rot" of the source software. Scriptware is effectively discontinued, making these files inaccessible on modern operating systems like Windows 11 or macOS without virtualization or legacy hardware. You typically cannot open them in industry-standard tools like Final Draft or Fade In directly. Users often find these files in old archives and need to rescue the content.
Conversion Recommendations:
For Editing/Migration: Convert to Rich Text Format (.RTF) or Plain Text (.TXT). This strips the proprietary binary wrapper, allowing you to import the text into Microsoft Word or re-format it in modern screenwriting software.
For Archiving: If you can view the file, print or convert it to PDF/A to preserve the visual layout permanently.
*Note: A small percentage of .SW3 files are configuration files for WinWedge by TAL Technologies, used to interface with serial devices (scales, gauges). These are simple settings files and generally do not require conversion.*
Convert.Guru analyzes your SW3 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The SW3 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SW3 converter.
